Montgomery wrote the novel in the wake of her younger brother's death and while she was teaching at a girls' school in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. At the time, she was also dealing with her failing health and struggling to support herself and her family. Despite these challenges, she managed to produce a well-received novel that has since gone on to become one of the best-selling books of all time.
