The University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers Football team has been a mainstay of the southeast since 1989. Founded in 1989, the UAB Blazers Football program has enjoyed success on the field and in the stands since its inception. That same year the team won the inaugural Conference USA Championship game with a dramatic last-second field goal over TCU. The 21st century has been no less successful for the Blazers, as they have had seven bowl appearances in total. The 2000s saw UAB realize success both individually and collectively with an unprecedented number of players achieving All-Conference recognition and making it to bowl games in 2004 and 2006. In 2005, wide receiver Roddy White became UAB's first NFL offensive draft pick when he was taken 27th overall by Atlanta Falcons. Later that same year, kicker Swayze Waters claimed both the Lou Groza Award presented to the nation's top collegiate placekicker and was named honorable mention All-American by Sports Illustrated Magazine after making 16 out of 19 attempts including three over 50 yards. The 2010s brought about yet another strong era for UAB football highlighted by future professionals like linebacker Myles McKee (Indianapolis Colts) and defensive tackle Jordan Miller (Seattle Seahawks). Running backs Jordan Howard (Chicago Bears) and Spencer Brown (Arizona Cardinals) added to an illustrious list of talent that has come through Birmingham during this time frame as well as rising stars like tight end Lucious Stanley (2021 NFL Draft Prospect). As UAB embarks last 2021 campaign with new head coach Will Hall leading the way into uncharted waters, Blazers fans will surely be excited to see what new heights their favorite program can reach next. Hall has already put in place an impressive coaching staff that looks to be a great fit with the program’s core values and style of play.
