The Rice Owls football program is the American football team that represents Rice University. The Owls compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of Conference USA (C-USA). The team is currently coached by Mike Bloomgren. The Rice Owls have played their home games at Rice Stadium since 1950. Rice fielded its first football team in 1912, shortly after opening. It joined the Southwest Conference as a charter member three years later. For close to 50 years, Rice was a top performer on both the regional and national level. From 1964 to 1991, Rice only had one overall winning season and never finished higher than third in SWC play.
