The University of Maryland, College Park proudly fields its football team - the mighty Maryland Terrapins! For over 100 years they have been a symbol of excellence in American football. Under the guidance of coach Ralph Friedgen, the Terps achieved a triumphant 11 conference championships in 2001, their most recent victory. On December 4, 2018, Maryland made history by welcoming Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley as the new head coach of their football program. Hailing from the District of Columbia and having previous experience as an assistant coach at Maryland, Locksley served intermittently as head coach for the Terrapins in their final 6 games following Randy Edsall's dismissal. Locksley's sterling reputation as a recruiter precedes him as he continues to draw some of the DMV's most talented high school players, encouraging them to remain close by and attend UMD. To launch the 2019 season, Maryland's offense shot out of a cannon under new head coach Locksley, racking up an incredible 142 points! Maryland emphatically began their season, crushing FCS Howard University 79-0 and then dominating 21st-ranked Syracuse University 63-20. Maryland's record-breaking scoring began with its first two games, totaling a remarkable 142 points! Maryland football has never scored more points against a ranked opponent than the 63 it tallied in its victory over Syracuse! Although the Terrapins were riding high on their undefeated streak and top-21 ranking, they, unfortunately, suffered a deflating defeat to the unranked Temple Owls. After beginning the season strongly, Maryland only managed to pick up one more victory against Rutgers. As a result, they would wind up with an overall record of 3-9. In a condensed season due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Terps battled against teams from the Big Ten in 2020, halting operations briefly after several players and staff members showed signs of COVID-19.
