  • The Denver Broncos are a professional American football team based in Denver, Colorado. The Denver Broncos compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league's American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team is headquartered in Dove Valley, Colorado, and plays home games at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado. The Denver Broncos are a professional American football franchise based in Denver, Colorado. The team was founded on August 14, 1959, when Minor League Baseball (MLB) owner Bob Howsam was granted an AFL charter franchise. After winning three AFL championships in the club's first four years of existence, the Broncos endured a decade of failure, never again achieving a winning record after 1978 until 1988, when quarterback Craig Morton guided them to an AFC Wild Card berth and their first playoff appearance since 1966. The Broncos went on to win another Super Bowl in 1999 under the leadership of quarterback John Elway, and seventeen years later, they won Super Bowl 50 with the help of quarterback Eli Manning. Through their unwavering excellence, the Broncos have earned eight AFC titles and a notable three Super Bowls to date. The team's first decade in the post-merger era was marked by significant success, with one of the league's top overall records throughout most of the 1990s. However, they have never been able to get past the AFC Championship Game. They then experienced a rough stretch in the 2000s, missing playoffs in five out of six seasons from 2002–2007. Following Denver's failure to make the postseason in 2006, head coach Mike Shanahan was dismissed; he was replaced by Josh McDaniels, who had previously worked for New England and New York Jets as offensive coordinator under Shanahan. In 2011, the Broncos hired John Fox as their new head coach. They made it to Super Bowl XLVIII in 2013 but lost 43-8 to the Seattle Seahawks. The Denver Broncos won their third title two years later when they defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 to win Super Bowl 50. After four seasons with the Broncos, Peyton Manning retired having overcome numerous injuries and ailments. Denver Broncos biggest rivals include Seattle Seahawks and Las Vegas Raiders.
