Carlos Santana was born in Autlán, Mexico, in 1947, and later migrated to San Francisco in the early 1960s. He combined Latin rhythms and rock guitar, inspired by blues luminaries B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. In 1966, he founded the Santana Blues Band, later abbreviated to Santana. Their breakthrough came at Woodstock in 1969, when Santana's spectacular performance of "Soul Sacrifice" revealed his distinctive fusion sound.
In 1969, the band's self-titled debut album peaked at number four on the Billboard charts, followed by Abraxas in 1970, which had singles like "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va." Santana has received ten Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year in 2000 for "Smooth" with Rob Thomas. His collaborations span generations, including Eric Clapton and Michelle Branch. Santana has almost 25 studio albums globally.
Santana's recent performances have focused on albums such as Africa Speaks (2019) and popular songs like "Maria Maria" and "Evil Ways." His concerts combine improvisation, Latin percussion, and audience engagement to produce unique live performances. Santana remains a global superstar, having sold over 100 million recordings and receiving a Kennedy Centre Honour in 2013.
