Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens in Great Lakes, Illinois, on March 23, 1953. Her father, Charles Stevens, was a singer in the gospel group The Last Days of Pompeii, and her mother Sandra Coleman was a member of the Chicago-based doo-wop group The Crystals. Khan began singing at the age of four in her church choir. By the age of seven, she had joined her parents' band, and by the time she was a teenager, she was singing professionally with different R&B and soul groups in Chicago. In 1969, at the age of 16, Khan joined the Black Panthers' auxiliary group, the Pantherettes. She was also a member of the first incarnation of the rock band Rufus. Khan left the group in 1971 to pursue a solo career and released her debut album, Chaka, in 1978. The album's single, "I'm Every Woman," became a smash hit, and helped to establish Khan as a soul and R&B legend. Khan has released 22 studio albums over the course of her career, including songs such as 1980's Nasty Girl, 1983's Tell Me Something Good, and 1984's I Feel for You. She has won 10 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. In addition to her music career, Khan is also an accomplished actor, having appeared in such films as The Color Purple (1985) and Blues Brothers 2000 (1998).
