Burton Cummings is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, and actor who first gained fame as the lead singer of the rock band The Guess Who. Cummings wrote or co-wrote many of the band's biggest hits, including "American Woman", "These Eyes" and "Share the Land". As a solo artist, he has released 10 studio albums and has had several top 40 hits in Canada and the United States. Cummings was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but grew up in Portage La Prairie. He began his music career at an early age when he joined a local band called The Deverons. After joining The Guess Who in 1965, Cummings quickly established himself as one of Canada’s most beloved musicians. His unique voice, combined with his songwriting ability and stage presence made him an instant hit with fans worldwide. During his time with The Guess Who, Cummings earned numerous awards, including three Juno Awards for Best Male Vocalist (1970–1973). He also won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for their single “American Woman” in 1971. In 1975, Burton left the band to pursue a solo career and released his self-titled debut album that same year. It featured several songs that became hits on both sides of the border such as “Stand Tall” and “I'm Scared”. Since then, Burton has continued to release critically acclaimed albums such as Dream Of A Child (1978), Up Close & Alone (1998), and Above The Ground (2004). In 2018 he released his tenth studio album titled Secret Paths which featured guest appearances from some of Canada's musical icons including Bruce Cockburn and Chantal Kreviazuk.
