Matt Andersen was born in Perth-Andover, New Brunswick in 1981. He grew up with Canadian folk and blues music all around him.  Andersen started out playing in modest places and then was noticed in international blues competitions. He is known for his powerful voice and soulful guitar skills.  His early albums, including Second Time Around (2007), which he put out himself, showed off his powerful voice and honest songwriting.

Andersen became well-known after winning the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2010. He was the first Canadian to do so.  Juno nominations and chart success went to albums like Coal Mining Blues (2011) and Weightless (2014).  His nonstop tours of North America and Europe, where he opened for giants like Buddy Guy, helped him reach more people.  Andersen has become a distinctive voice in modern blues with more than 10 studio albums.
