Rhiannon Giddens is an American musician. She is a singer, songwriter, banjo player, and violinist. She is a founding member of the Grammy-winning country, bluegrass, and Americana band Carolina Chocolate Drops, where she was the lead singer and fiddle player. Giddens has released two solo albums, Tomorrow Is My Turn (2015) and Freedom Highway (2017). She is a recipient of the MacArthur "Genius" Grant. Rhiannon Giddens was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on February 21, 1977. Her mother is a historian and her father is an African-American carpenter. She has two brothers, one of whom is filmmaker Raphael Nash Giddens. She was exposed to music from a young age, singing in her church choir and playing the violin in her school orchestra. She graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 1999 with a degree in viola performance. After college, Giddens moved to Pittsboro, North Carolina, where she co-founded the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops. The band played a mix of old-timey music and original songs, with Giddens often taking the lead on vocals and fiddle. The band released three albums between 2010 and 2015, receiving widespread critical acclaim. In 2014, Giddens released her first solo album, Tomorrow Is My Turn. The album featured covers of songs by a variety of artists, including Dolly Parton, Odetta, and Patsy Cline. The album was produced by T Bone Burnett and received critical acclaim. In 2017, Giddens released her second solo album, Freedom Highway. The album was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement and featured original songs as well as covers of traditional spirituals. The album received critical acclaim and won a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album. Giddens is a recipient of the MacArthur "Genius" Grant. She has been nominated for three Grammy Awards and has won one.
