Murphy Johnson was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Murph started rapping when he was 14, inspired by Southern hip-hop stars like OutKast and T.I. He got better at his craft by performing in local talent shows and freestyle battles early on. He chose the stage name "It's Murph" to show how lively and confident he was with his lyrics. His first mixtapes, like City Lights (2016), showed off his clever wordplay and fast delivery, which won him a loyal underground following.
