Julia Wolfe is an American composer who mixes classical, rock, and folk music. She was born in Philadelphia in 1958. She went to SUNY Purchase and the University of Michigan to learn how to write music, orchestrate it, and make electronic music. Wolfe's early works were influenced by minimalism and experimental theater. She regularly works with groups to make soundscapes that are immersive and multi-layered, which go against the usual concert format.

Wolfe has written more than 20 notable works, including as Steel Hammer and Anthracite Fields, which earned the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2015. Top orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and Bang on a Can All-Stars have played her music for audiences of more than 10,000 people throughout the world. She often works with choreographers and visual artists, and her music has been played at festivals all around North America and Europe.

Julia Wolfe currently does 10 to 12 live concerts a year with orchestras of 30 to 50 musicians, mixing percussion, strings, and vocals. Signature performances include excerpts from Fire in my Mouth, which last 60 to 90 minutes and involve multimedia images. Each concert has lively rhythms and complex textures that keep the audience's attention. The venues can hold 500 to 2,000 people.
